This morning, I got up a bit early since the baby was stirring. It was one of those times when you decided to go back to bed for 30 minutes or just get up. Well, I decided to get up and answer some emails before getting ready. Just before getting ready, I went back to my night stand to get my water, and low and behold, my wife was sleeping with something, there in my spot, was a bark scorpion. Okay, not my first encounter with a scorpion, but the first discovery in my bed.
To make matters a little more disturbing is that our bedroom is on the second floor and we have a 16 month old. So this morning, I started to refresh my knowledge of scorpions particularly what do with with young children around them.
We live in the desert and scorpions are native to this area, so I have to learn to live with them. We do the typical thing, we have a really good pest control company come out and make sure that their food supply is pretty limited, try to keep the house pretty tight to prevent any access points. Tonight, we’ll be signing a flashlight on the doors to determine if there are any openings they can use.
The good news is that it is really rare to have a death associated with a scorpion sting. Those that are rather young and those that are elderly are most at risk. So with them, it is wise to make a trip to the Emergency Room, just to make sure. Since we recently moved, I did a check to see which hospital is actually closest (I’m lucky, I have two that are tied). I also read up on the symptoms of a sting, since my 16 month old can’t quite say I was stung by a scorpion yet, and hopefully will never have to say that.
