I’ve long known that the Information Age would not last forever, and recently I’ve started to think that it’s starting to come to an end. I notice that more jobs relating to information are starting to head out of the country much like the industrial jobs of the last age. Just like with the industrial field, there will always be some jobs located locally to deal with information. So I started to figure out what is the next big thing that will be our next age? Then in the last month, I’ve noticed a common theme. This might be from our new President, or it just might the fact that it’s time. I think we’re entering the Green Age.
One friend that I was sharing my thoughts with said that he felt that our energy dependence on other countries is a national security issue. I have to agree, I feel that energy is a critical need that we have and we will have to address it very soon. But that’s not being green. Well, it can be, renewable energy sources is a complex challenge and I can’t think of a better country to figure it out.
Discussions have also come up in Committee meeting, Board meetings, and everyday conversations. I believe in doing my part (hey, I rode the light rail to jury duty!!). I also recycle as much from a house that I am rehabbing, either to Habitat for Humanity or Stardust. My soda bottles go into the recycle bin, even sitting in my car all day until I get home. Does this make me green? Probably not, I have some good habits, but there is still a lot more that I could do, so I’m rather a light green.
Do I work hard to find green materials to put in my projects, nope, if they exist, look good and priced right, yes, the green factor will win me over. When I say a house is green, probably not, I think being green is about habit, it’s everyday. Buying something green doesn’t make you a green person if you put it in a store bag and then throw that store bag away.
So I think that the future will be green, I will have to learn some new habits, and I look forward to the innovative and impressive solutions that we’ll find to our needs. Until then, let’s all try to do something little better each and everyday.
